Meine Forschung befasst sich mit multiplen Stressfaktoren in Agrarlandschaften, mit einem Schwerpunkt auf den Auswirkungen von Pestiziden auf die terrestrische Biodiversität. Außerdem arbeite ich an ökologischen Aspekten und biogeografischen Mustern von Ameisen in Südostasien und deren Anwendung im Naturschutzmanagement.

Ich habe Biologie an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg und der Duke University (North Carolina, USA) mit dem Schwerpunkt Tropenbiologie und Tierökologie studiert und 2001 promovierte ich mit einer Dissertation über die Auswirkungen von Forstmanagement auf die Ameisenbiodiversität in tropischen Regenwäldern. Anschließend arbeitete ich in der Abteilung für Ökotoxikologie in der agrochemischen Industrie in der Schweiz und in England.

Seit 2006 leite ich die Abteilung für Gemeinschaftsökologie und Ökotoxikologie am Institut für Umweltwissenschaften der Universität Koblenz-Landau.

Meine Habilitation fasst meine jüngsten Forschungen unter dem Titel "Agricultural landscapes, their biodiversity and impacts of pesticides" zusammen.

Ich bin als externer Experte für die EFSA (Europäische Behörde für Lebensmittelsicherheit) an der Entwicklung der Risikobewertung von Pestiziden für verschiedene terrestrische Gruppen beteiligt und arbeite in Arbeitsgruppen der SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry). Ich war Mitglied der Arbeitsgruppe für Biodiversität in der Agrarlandschaft der Deutschen Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina und diene derzeit im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat der Bundesregierung zum Nationalen Aktionsplan zur nachhaltigen Anwendung von Pflanzenschutzmitteln im Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft.

Ich bin Programmkoordinator des internationalen Masterprogramms „Master of Science in Ecotoxicology“.
