Upper Rhine Cluster for Sustainability Resarch

INTERREG Project Upper Rhine Cluster for Sustainability Research (URCforSR)

Society’s most pressing challenges cannot be addressed in isolation. Developing sustainable solutions around climate change, resource shortages, overconsumption, and social inequality mandates interdisciplinary approaches and trans-border cooperation. This understanding is at the core of the INTERREG V-funded project Upper Rhine Cluster for Sustainability Research, in which the University of Koblenz-Landau collaborates with the five EUCOR universities in Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Basel, Strasbourg, and Mulhouse. The project aims to connect researchers around the topic ‘governance of sustainable growth’ and to establish a governance structure that enables a more effective use of existing expertise in the Upper Rhine region.

Some 80 researchers will engage with various topics in five separate, but interconnected streams:

•    Governance
•    Electricity, infrastructure and societal change
•    Transformation and innovation
•    Management of resources
•    Multiculturalism and multilingualism

At Campus Landau, the focus will be on the opportunities and challenges arising from the cultural and linguistic diversity prevalent in the Upper Rhine region. Alongside the effect on understandings of sustainability, sustainable consumption and the implementation of sustainability in business and politics will play a central role. The overall aim is to contribute to transformations towards a more sustainable society.
