Major questions: How regeneration of primary Tropical Montane Forests will respond to nutrient deposition caused for climate change?
A multitude of studies investigated the potential transformations within tropical forest ecosystems in the coming years considering various global change scenarios. In recent research, the particular interest is the deposition of nutrients in primary forests, a factor intricately linked to land use practices and deforestation. This study aims to understand the variations in seedling establishment, diversity, and growth in the frame of a fertilization experiment that simulates nutrient deposition.
Through long-term monitoring started in 2008, NUMEX found a diverse array of responses, including shifts in growth rates and increase production of organic matter in mature trees but also changes in the regeneration dynamics in seedling communities. Few seedling species of trees have exhibited specific responses in establishment and growth potentially shaping the future composition of montane forests. However, changes in species community dynamics despite the time of monitoring continue to be assessed to understand the functional changes in species interactions.
